Summary

An ion cannon was a weapon which fired highly ionized particles or highly ionized plasma.
Ion cannons were energy weapons that were similar to laser cannons, but instead of firing destructive blasts, the energy bolts disabled all electrical and computer systems aboard a target. Instead of causing direct physical damage to a starship, the ion cannon blast overloaded and fused circuitry, computers, flight control systems, sensors, shields, weapons, communications, and life-support systems.
